"My grandparents, MaMa and Papa Milstead lived there and most of their children worked at the mill at some time or other. My Daddy went to work there when he was seven years old. He said that when the authorities would show up from time to time, the men were told by [the manager] to set the children out the windows and they were told hide until all was clear. After his stint in WWII, Daddy tried farming for a few years, until 1954 when in November we moved to the village. He was a doffer, and continued working there until one cold morning in 1966 when he became ill while working and passed away later that day."
